C. Pets & Guardians
Auravale’s cria are weaned at between 6-8 months of age, usually in mid Spring each year.
Choosing a pet shortly after weaning allows for optimal bonding and easier training.
All of our alpacas are handled regularly and use to being around people. They are inquisitive and friendly.
Having a young alpaca requires additional work to ensure they are well trained and socialised but the rewards are enormous.
Females listed in the section above can also make great pets and there are more listed below. Alpacas are herd animals and you need a minimum of two for them to be happy and secure.
The use of alpaca to protect lambing ewes, kidding goats and poultry has become a proven form of sound flock management. Herd guards are chosen based on their natural guarding ability and are usually displaying these traits at around 18 months of age. Guardians should ideally be introduced to your flock 4-6 weeks ahead of lambing/kidding.
